FARMERS’ MARKET TO BE HELD THIS WINTER
AT COUNTY CENTER
Shop fresh New York produce and dairy
products indoors, all winter long
For the
first time, Westchester residents will
be able to buy farm-fresh New York State
produce, cheeses and dairy products,
meats and baked goods, and wine and beer
directly from farmers all year long
during the Indoor Farmers’ Market,
to be held on select Sundays from
December through May, at the
Westchester County Center in White
Plains, County Executive Andy Spano
announced today.
Dates
are Sundays, December 16, 2007, and
January 6, February 3, March 16, April
20 and May 18, 2008. Hours are 10 a.m.
to 3 p.m.
“Now our
residents can continue buying these
fresh foods and products throughout the
winter months as well, just like they
are used to doing during the summer
months,” Spano said. “And, our local
farmers will now grow produce and
products especially for this venue every
month.”
According
to Spano, the market will comprise more
than 20 vendors who are farmers and food
producers, all from New York State. And,
to help tempt shoppers as well as to
help them make their selections, they
can sample food as they have fun making
their way through the market.
Shoppers
hungry for fresh winter produce can
choose from a dazzling array of fresh
harvested winter crops like squash,
turnips, carrots and onions, plus
potatoes that come in new and different
colors, shapes and sizes, and feature
subtle differences in flavor.
Winter-grown micro-greens will be
available – miniature versions of the
better-known field greens but with a
greater flavor punch.
There will
be a selection of the finest wild and
pasture-raised meats, such as pork,
beef, lamb, rabbit, venison, goat and
poultry. Delicious sausages made from
many of these meats will also be
available.
And, what
farmers’ market would be complete
without artisan New York State cheeses,
crafted from the milk of cows, goats and
sheep.
Delicious
fresh baked desserts, quiches and
breads, along with maple syrup and honey
products will appeal to the sweet tooth
of even the most discriminating shopper.
And, a selection of New York State-made
juices, cider and wines will round out
the selection of goods and products
offered in this showcase of fresh and
flavorful delights.
To add to
the day’s events, each month there will
be a special guest chef who will
offer tips and recipes that incorporate
the local food and beverage products
that will be featured at that month’s
market, along with a registered
dietitian who will provide
information about the nutritional value
of the foods offered at the market and
the benefits of including them into your
own diet.
Spano
said, “This market is a perfect
complement to our Be Fit Westchester
program, by providing residents with the
fresh foods and vegetables that will
help them eat healthy and enjoy a
healthier lifestyle.”
In
addition, the market will feature a
variety of “home grown” musical
entertainment each month to add to
the festivities. During the December
program, there will be performances of
festive, seasonal music by the Music
Conservatory of Westchester, a
community
school of the arts providing music and
theater education as well as music
therapy for people of all ages. James
and Mary Anne Lo Russo will play
classical guitar duets, and the Teen
Vocal Ensemble will be led by Tom
Jamerson and Walter Winterfeldt in
spirited performances of holiday
favorites.
The Indoor
Farmers’ Market will also give visitors
an opportunity to get acquainted with
Hilltop Hanover Farm, Westchester’s
newest environmental resource center.
Staff from the farm will be on hand
beginning in February with photos of the
property, brochures describing classes
that are conducted there, maps for the
hiking trails, and general information
about the farm’s current agricultural
partners.
Additional
vendors are welcome; call (914) 864-7148
for more information.
Admission is free. Parking at the County
Center lot is $4.

Farmers’ Market is sponsored by
